What to see during the Bellver tour?

This construction is located 114 m above sea level and 4 km from Palma. It offers spectacular views of the entire city of Palma, the inland and the Tramuntana mountain range. Its name, Bellver, means “Incredible Views”.

It was conceived as a palace-fortress by Jaume II in the early 14th century for Mallorcan royalty and strategically located to prevent future attacks. But it has also been used as a refuge in times of epidemics and social revolts and as a civil and military prison.

Its circular shape makes it one of the most important Gothic castles in the world. It is considered the only circular Gothic-style construction in Spain and one of the few of Europe. It consists of three semi-circular towers attached and the keep separated from the castle about seven meters.

It currently houses the Palma History Museum, part of the collection of Greco-Roman sculptures of Cardinal Antoni Despuig, a space to one of its most illustrious prisoners: Carlos III’s Minister of Justice, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos and a room dedicated to the Mallorcan scientist and one of the mathematical problems not yet solved: Ramon Llull and the Quadrature of the Circle.

The visit ends on the terraces of the castle to contemplate the landscape that surrounds us.
