When you arrive in Mallorca for the first time is always interesting and can be amusing to learn new Mallorcan idioms and their meanings like \u201cWhen in Rome, do as the Romans do!\u201d Here there is a list with some Mallorcan expressions and sayings with their meanings. \u201cMem” (o “meam\u201d)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Quiet common Mallorcan expression and its translation it’s a little bit difficult, it is said just before speaking when we are thinking about we are going to say and it would mean something like \u201clet\u2019s see\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDaixonar\u201d y \u201caix\u00f2\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Here in Mallorca, when we don\u2019t know a word or that word don\u2019t come out we always use\u00a0<\/span>aix\u00f2\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and it can be translated as \u201cthat\u201d, for example,\u00a0<\/span>dona\u2019m es d\u2019aix\u00f2<\/span><\/em>\u00a0would mean \u201cgive me that\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, we can turn it into a verb:\u00a0<\/span>daixonar<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and it is used as the word\u00a0<\/span>aix\u00f2<\/span><\/em>, for instance:\u00a0<\/span>Daixonem sa sal<\/span><\/em>\u00a0would mean \u201cgive me the salt\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And the best part:\u00a0<\/span>daixonem es d’aix\u00f2<\/span><\/em>, verb and word together! But don\u2019t worry because you will understand what we want to say thanks to the context and actions!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUep! Com anam?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

It is our official greeting and it means \u201cHi, how are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It would mean \u201cI call you\u201d or \u201cwe keep in touch\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t worry, it is quite common, that happens the 99,9% of the time, there\u2019s a tiny chance that you and that person talk again in an unlikely future, other dimension or galaxy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCristo en pel, taronges navel\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Expression of emotion or maximum surprise.\u00a0<\/span>En pel<\/span><\/em>\u00a0means \u201cnaked\u201d and\u00a0<\/span>taronges navel\u00a0<\/span><\/em>are a type of oranges, so literally translated would be: \u201cNaked Jesus Christ, navel oranges!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cXubec\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

It is the typical drowsiness after eating and the best solution for that is taking a nap or the Spanish\u00a0<\/span>siesta<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Gat”<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Gat\u00a0<\/span><\/em>for Mallorcan people means \u201cdrunk\u201d and the expression would be:\u00a0<\/span>vaig gat\u00a0<\/span><\/em>o\u00a0<\/span>quin gat que duc\u00a0<\/span><\/em>o\u00a0<\/span>gatera<\/span><\/em>\u00a0that means \u201cI\u2019m drunk\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCap de fava amb orelles\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

This idiom is one of the many ways to say \u201cfool\u201d or \u201cdummy\u201d and means literally \u201cbroad bean head with ears\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other ways to say \u201cfool\u201d are\u00a0<\/span>cap de suro\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(\u201ccork head\u201d) and\u00a0<\/span>cap de pera<\/span><\/em> (\u201cpear head\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cQu\u00e8 n’ets de poma!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Literally means \u201cyou are an apple\u201d and refers to someone naive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCapfico\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It is a dip and the most famous question during spring and summer is\u00a0<\/span>anam a pegar un capfico?,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>“Do you want to take a dip?”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUro!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It has no translation and means surprise and exaggeration, in English could be an OMG!!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAix\u00f2 \u00e9s mel\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It idiom refers something delicious but also you can use it when you are so comfortable no matter where you are or the circle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDa-li cebes!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

This expression is quite famous and it is used as a \u201ccome on!\u201d or \u201cyes, you can!\u201d and it would be translated as \u201cgive him\/her onions!\u201d, as you can see nothing to do with the reality. Moreover, this expression became quite popular thanks to the song title\u00a0<\/span>Da-li cebes!\u00a0<\/span><\/em>from a Mallorcan musical group known as Ossifar.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAii, cavallet, quan eres jove\u2026 que hi anaves de pentinat\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

It idiom refers in a funny way the past times, now we are older than then and our skills are getting worse day after day.<\/span><\/p>\n

And literally translated would be: \u201coooooh, young horse, when you were young\u2026.you looked so well\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cQuin Cristo\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

We don\u2019t know exactly where this expression comes from, but it is used to refers to something inappropriate alarmingly.

\u201cVida de burgu\u00e9s…menjar, beure i no fer res\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The idiomatic Spanish expression\u00a0can be translated into English as:<\/p>\n

\u2018Live the good life\u2019, \u2018Have the time of one’s life\u2019 or \u2018Live it up\u2019.

These options reflect the idea of enjoying oneself to the fullest, living in luxury or carefree living. The choice will depend on the context.<\/p>\n
