Free things to do in Palma, is it possible? Yes! Palma, like many cities, offers many free activities for visitors and locals to discover the Mallorcan culture and history.

Firstly, Mallorca Free Tour organises free walking tours through the Old Town Palma from Monday to Saturday at 11 a.m. Our meeting point is in front of the Tourism Information Office in Parc de la Mar (nearby the big lake). And also, you can come to our “Mysteries, crimes and legends of Mallorca” at 6 p.m on Friday! It starts in Plaza Mayor, the city centre of Palma.

Palma Old Town:

The first one is the most important building of the city of Palma: the Cathedral of Mallorca, known as La Seu. It was built between the 13th and 17th century and it is one of the most spectacular Gothic cathedrals of eastern Spain and the only cathedral in the world called “Cathedral by the Sea”. The entrance is always free during the services (check here the timetable) and free for all residents in Mallorca. Near the cathedral, there is the Lonja (the old fisher market). It is a civil gothic building of the 15th-century built by Guillem Sagrera. It was headquartered in the Merchant guild. Come in and admire its inner architecture and above all its columns: it seems you are in a palm tree forest (check here the opening times).

Moreover, in Palma, we can visit for free three manor houses. The Fundacio Joan March, is located in the shopping street of Sant Miquel. Here you can admire contemporary works of art by famous painters and sculptors such as Miró, Dalí, Gris, Chillida, Tàpies and Miquel Barceló among others (check here the opening time).

Another one is Can Balaguer This Mallorcan manor house dates from the 18th century. In 1951 became the property of the City Hall of Palma and between 2009 -2016 the house was refurbished. Today we can contemplate its main exhibition: La Casa Possible. A tour through the main rooms of this manor house. Can Balaguer open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And the third one is located quite close, another Mallorcan patio known as Casal Solleric dated from the 18th century and located in Born promenade.

Beyond the Old Town of Palma, there is the castle of San Carlos, a military fortress of the 17th century that defended the bay of Portopí. Today, the castle houses the Military Museum of Palma. It can be visited for free from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And the last one is Portopí lighthouse. It is considered the world third ancient lighthouse and it has one of the most important lighthouse exhibitions in the world. From Wednesday to Thursday free visits are organised and you need to book in advance.

Free things to do in Palma de Mallorca – free entrances depending on the day:

Outside Palma, there is the spectacular castle of Bellver. It was built by Jaume the Second at the beginning of the 14th century and it is one of the most important gothic castles in the world due to its round shape. In the beginning, it was built as a royal residence, however, it has been also used as a refugee during plaques and as a prison. Currently, you could find the History Museum of Palma and the cardinal Despuig’s Greek and Roman sculptures collection. The entrance costs 4€, on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the entrance is free.

And near the castle, there is the Fundació Pilar and Joan Miró. Here you can visit the place where the artist worked for 30 years and discover his workshops, art, work and his creative process. The entrance is 9€, however on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m and the first Sunday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the ticket is free (check here the timetable).

Already into Old Town of Palma, there is the Museum of Mallorca, which is located in the ancient Mallorcan patio known as Ca la Gran Cristiana. The tickets cost 2’4 € and on Sundays is free.

In front of the Cathedral of Mallorca, there is the Almudaina Royal Palace, built during the 10th century by the Muslims and refurbished during Christian times. The visit costs 7€; Wednesday and Thursday (from October to March from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from April to September from 5 p.m. to 7 p.) the entrance is free.

And the last one on this tour is the new Museu d’Art Sacre de Mallorca. It was opened in 2020 and is located nearby the Cathedral. Inside the museum, we can admire the sacred art of Mallorca and some priceless pieces as the Jewish rimonin from the 15th century. The entrance is 4€ and on Saturday is always free.

Free things to do in Palma de Mallorca – low price entrances.

Finally, we might talk about the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Es Baluard. Opened in 2004 in a 16th-century bulwark; the union of both buildings is through simple and straight lines that allow a great fusion between two different eras. The main entrance costs 6€, however, every Friday you fix the price of the entrance! (Always from a minimum price of 0,10€).
